Night Birds

Walking home tonight I watched two sea gulls (lake gulls?) fly through the dark sky...one leading, the other following maybe forty feet behind. They do this a lot, flying in formation.

I can't tell if the front gull is striking out on his own with the second flying support or if the lead bird is the point man for the second. The relationship is symbiotic...when the front bird turns the second turns, too, but you can't really tell which one had the idea first. Even flying far apart they're tied together by a united direction.

It's one of my favourite night things to watch.
