A Canadian political update for Yanks and Brits and whatnot...or for Canucks who are living under a rock.

One week down, and the new Tory government is already fumbling the ball. Prime Minister Harper (my soul screams in pain) has made a number of questionable cabinet appointments, and even his own party is grumbling.

  • Gordon O'Connor, the Minister of Defence, was previously a lobbyist for a number of big military contractors. Like he's going to forget his recent employers...right.
  • David Emerson, an MP from Vancouver, was appointed to the international trade portfolio. Thing is, he ran as a Liberal. Harper railed against floor-crossers, saying that anyone who wants to switch parties should have to stand for election under the new party.
  • Conservative party coordinator Michael Fortier was appointed to Senate without even running for Parliament. Harper also promised no unelected Senators.

So much for accountability.

Harper seems to be trying to pull a Bush...he has no mandate but is governing as if he has a large majority. It's a Karl Rove-ism, to simply ignore criticism, or brush it off as partisan politics. Since when has calling someone on a lie been partisan?

Anyhow, we may be having a fall election after all. Fun.

Can the Queen take over now?
