One Small Step for Woman...

It was with some disbelief and great pride that I read the news off the Anglican Church of Canada's e-mail update...

Presiding Bishop ElectThe Episcopal Church (U.S.A.) has elected Katharine Jefferts Schori, bishop of the Diocese of Nevada, as their 26th Presiding Bishop. She is the first woman to hold that position, both in ECUSA and in the worldwide Anglican Communion.

Having come from the American church, I do take some pride that they're the first ones to finally "get over it" and take such a huge and important step toward healing a centuries-old wound in the church. From what I've read, Bishop Jefferts Schori is an excellent choice and will make a fine Presiding Bishop. They won't be happy down Nigeria Way, where ECUSA's and the Anglican Church of Canada's acceptance of women and homosexuals is not popular, but that's an issue for another day...not to mention their own blessed problem.

For now, I invite you to join me in prayer for the new Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. May God guide her in wisdom and vision and strengthen her for the job ahead.

Almighty God, we thank you for raising up among us faithful servants for the ministry of your Word and Sacraments. We pray that Katharine may be to us an effective example in word and action, in love and patience, and in holiness of life. Grant that we, with her, may serve you now, and always rejoice in your glory; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
