Mujahedeen Shura Council, an umbrella organization of Sunni Arab extremist groups in Iraq issued the following statement, directed at the Pope: "You and the West are doomed, as you can see from the defeat in Iraq, Afghanistan, Chechnya and elsewhere. You infidels and despots, we will continue our jihad and never stop until God avails us to chop your necks and raise the fluttering banner of monotheism, when God's rule is established governing all people and nations." Well, that's one response when someone says that your faith is violent and destructive. As asinine as the pope was, quoting such an obviously inflamatory text, the response from some quarters is just making him look...right. I feel most for the masses of ordinary, non-crazy Muslims who have taken a double blow - their religion is wrongly slammed by the leader of another faith, and then the looniest members of their own religion feed the fire. I guess it's a bit like being associated with Jerry Falwell. Sigh. |
