May Two-Four, Eh?

Here in Canuckistan we're on a long weekend...ostensibly to celebrate Victoria Day, but really just another excuse to buy loads of beer and get blotto.

The whole holiday (which is a stretch of the original meaning of the word, "holy day") is known as May Two-Four...as in "How was yer Two-Four weekend, eh?" The name comes from the fact that the weekend usually lands somewhere close to May 24th. It was originally a Monday off, but now seems to have crept into Friday. Actually, Thursday noon saw a lot of office workers on the subway. Employers might want to head this one off before it's the May Two-Four week rather than weekend.

Two-Four also refers, conveniently enough, to a twenty-four case of beer, which is commonly on sale for the weekend parties. Amy and I haven't purchased a 2-4, not having 22 friends with which to drink it or livers capable of handling the task alone. We are planning, however, a jaunt to the Beaches (a hippy neighbourhood on the east side of Toronto) for a fireworks display this evening. The weather network web site claims that it's going to rain on our parade. The sky and sunshine claim otherwise.

Go sky and sunshine!
